Gout
Gout is an inflammatory arthritis characterised by sudden and severe joint pain, predominantly affecting males. It commonly presents initially in the first metatarsophalangeal joint (big toe), though other joints such as the ankle, knee, and midfoot may also be involved. The condition arises from hyperuricemia (elevated levels of uric acid in the blood), triggering an intense inflammatory response that results in pain, swelling and erythema.
A Podiatrist can help diagnose and manage gout, particularly when it affects the feet or ankles, by assessing joint inflammation, recommending appropriate footwear and orthotics, and advising on pain relief strategies. They also educate patients on lifestyle modifications to reduce uric acid levels and may collaborate with other healthcare providers for long-term medical management and monitoring of complications like joint damage or tophi.
